Macho came to us from
the Great Dane Rocky Mountain Association and we were
told he was mix between a Dane and an American Bulldog. But after
speaking with Rhonda and researching online – we definitely think
he’s a Catahoula mix! Macho was brought to the Great Dane
rescue from New Mexico as a stray dog. One couple adopted him but shortly afterwards
the couple did not work out and Macho was ignored again and was not treated
well. When my husband sent me his picture I fell in love with him nstantly. Our initial meeting with Macho proved
that he was a sweetie. He loves to lean into you and be constantly
petted. Our first challenge with Macho is that he’s a runner
– any opportunity for him to escape and he’s gone and we discovered
quickly that you can’t call for a deaf dog. At first, my
husband thought the initial chase on foot would suffice but Macho proved
that his athleticism can take him far. We’ve now discovered how
to retrieve him when he takes off…just hang out side in the front
yard and play Frisbee with our Doberman, Gretchen – he’ll see
us playing and come back for the fun.
Another challenge is
that Macho has OCD. In the beginning he would pop up through out the
night and chase his shadows. That’s finally calmed down but
when he’s in the backyard he’ll run a single path which has now
turned our grass into a dirt path. But that’s ok! He’s
knows basic commands like “come”, “sit” and
“lay” but I would love to teach him more – especially his
name! Great things about owning a deaf dog is that they’re not
scared of the vacuum and they don’t wake up the baby by barking when
the doorbell rings.
